WINTER 2008
TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT NOTES
This colder driving season shows that the levels of enforcement are
slightly higher than usual. Calls from the entire New York metro area show that the various police agencies are aggressively enforcing the
traffic laws. A cynic might point out that this is a "free" revenue source for the municipalities in tight budget times, or that the
lawmen are just doing their job. The New York State Police "slowdown"
is well over and NYSP tickets are no different from any other issued, no matter what you may have heard.
There's a lot of action on the numbered Interstates, The Taconic and other Parkways. We cover them all.
There is no doubt that with the current economic crisis, it is more important than ever to challenge every ticket.
Insurance rates will only increase as companies look for money to replace that missing in other lines of business-and insurance is
mandatory, so it is not price sensitive, even if you are.
New York State has recently raised the "surcharges" on tickets to $85.00 and one may assume the DRA tax will rise (Driver Responsibility
Assessment) once Gov. Patterson recalls the Legislature after the presidential elections. The current "downstream" economic hit of a
very typical eight point ticket, (86/55) is approx. $250.00 in fine and $450.00 DRA tax. Plus Surcharge.
Fighting the ticket is almost always a better deal than "just paying it".
